Chicory Presents: A Better Shopping List for Grocery Shopping

Making shopping lists is frustrating.

You spend 10 minutes determining what to make and what you need to buy in order to make it, another 5 minutes consolidating your shopping list so you don't get 5 dozen eggs and thinking of the right quantities to get (especially if you're planning out for a week or making a number of dishes for a big meal), and another 40 minutes at the store hunting around the aisles for all your ingredients, worrying about the sizes of everything and if you're buying enough and, of course, trying to get the right products at the best prices.

Perhaps this is why most of us end up making the same dishes over and over again. It's hard enough to plan and shop when we know what ingredients we need, never mind going on a culinary adventure that might require buying new or strange products.

At Chicory we'd like to introduce to you the better shopping list.

1. See the real products you need to buy in order to make the recipes you want to cook
2. Consolidate similar ingredients without having to click a button
3. Automatically find the products with the best matching sizes and quantities even if you're cooking for 20 people (try playing around by changing the servings size - it's a lot of fun to see how it understands what you need to buy even if you're cooking for a bunch of guests)
4. Have the best priced item matched first for easy shopping that's light on the wallet
5. Select any number of servings you want and still get the best products and prices (the products might even change in order to get you the best deal for the quantities you need!)
6. Get everything delivered from a local online grocer or print out the shopping list (we use the groceries carried by Stop & Shop to make the list - more stores coming soon)

Make sure you get the best products with the best prices no matter what you're making this week.

What we're learning about Chicory

As we've mentioned before, an early version of Chicory is currently live in a few Westchester, NY locations. We're learning so much from talking with potential customers (sometimes if people don't want to use Chicory we learn even more than if they did) and finally having people use the application. Plus, people are starting to like it.

That's right. We have repeat customers - and we couldn't be happier (it's even cooler because of how basic Chicory is right now and how much more functionality we have planned!).

Adding a little Chicory to your diet

Pretty much everyone has eating preferences. From not liking 'exotic' flavors or textures to not being able to eat gluten, our personal diets rule over how we choose, look at, and respond to food.

Some people love fast food. Others despise it. Same goes for quinoa, eating vegan, having a sweet tooth, and countless other eating quirks and diets.

Maybe there's no right answer. We all just eat a little differently than the person sitting next to us. And that's okay.

Online grocery and recipes: what we've learned so far

Chicory (learn more about us at www.chicoryapp.com) has finally launched!! Well, only in 2 zip codes but that still counts! This means that we're out of the lab and into the consumers' hands (which is awesome because the lab was getting kind of boring).

We're currently delivering groceries through Peapod
Although we've only been live for about a week we've already met with dozens of busy home cooks to talk about all sorts of things, from if they've ever used online grocery to what their kids like to eat for dinner. They've also all tried out the current iteration of our web app.

Here are some of the most interesting things we've learned about online grocery and recipes from our fabulous early customers in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, New York.

1) The reasons that make people want to cook heavily determine how likely they are to use our app and online grocery.

We used to not ask the really simple question "why do you cook?" But, the more people we talked with the more we realized that there was a big difference between someone who cooks

Why, yes, Chicory could help you with that!

Gina
Time is a precious commodity these days. This is especially true for people who love to cook. I recently asked my sister, Gina, to help out Chicory by making a couple of dishes and blogging about them.

After looking over a list of recipes, she asked if she could make Maple Salmon and the Southwestern Style Shrimp Taco Salad.
A few days later I received this email from her:

"Hey Joey,
I only have time to make one recipe this week. I have bio class from 6-9pm on Mon & Wed, so my only nights to cook are Tues & Thurs and tomorrow night I'm flying to San Francisco. All this is to say I made the Maple Salmon last night, but won't be able to make the shrimp tacos. I took a bunch of pics and
